QUICK TAP: CRUSADERS BLOW HURRICANES AWAY IN SEMIFINAL

Again the match turned on discipline and when Waratahs’ replacement hooker Damien Fitzpatrick was sin-binned for a cynical play, the Lions scored twice to put distance between themselves and the Australians.

The Waratahs made a strong start and had their reward after three minutes when flanker Ned Hannigan capped a passing movement by taking a long pass from second five-eighths Kurtley Beale to score the opening try.

A lineout turnover when there was a mix-up between Marx and the intended receiver looked to have been negated when the Lions were able to regain the ball only to see Ruan Combrinck kick the ball out on the full.

The Waratahs were soon back in the Lions’ 22m area and quick ball from a ruck saw Beale’s long pass find fullback Israel Folau and he was able to cut back in in the seventh minute to score.

Working their way back into Waratahs’ territory, first five-eighths Elton Jantjies broke the tackle and then set up the ruck and when the ball emerged flanker Kwagga Smith was able to go over in the tackle and touch down in the 20th minute.

The danger of kicking too deep was seen when wing Aphiwe Dyanti fielded a Bernard Foley kick just inside the Lions’ 22m area. He took the ball to the chasing defenders, lobbed a chip kick, regained it and ran in a superb solo try in the 25th minute.
