House for a Photographer

Placed in an abandoned quarry neighboring Brecon Beacons National Park, the House for a Photographer is inspired by the dweller’s craft. The long, rectangular form resembles the darkened box of a camera obscura. Its concrete and red oxidized steel shell sits lightly on the site, elevated on a foundation of stilts to not disrupt the natural landscape. A steel bridge leads to an interior that features four bedrooms, a dark room, and library, while a concealed door opens to a hidden outdoor cigar room. A combination of natural light and minimalist design throughout shape an ideal space for creating and displaying art. On the end of the structure, a wall of glazing acts as a lens capturing views of the surrounding nature.
