Hawthorn House

Situated in the suburbs of Melbourne, the Hawthorn House isn’t enveloped in expansive landscapes but it is neighbored by three mature trees. To focus on the existing vegetation and the exterior garden, arch cutouts frame in the lush views. The remainder of the home is wrapped in a thick concrete shell, a contrast to the verdant surroundings. Its shell was formed on-site using rough-hewn Oregon timber, giving the facade a unique texture. The boards were then repurposed as fencing around the property. Exposed concrete on the interior creates a minimalist aesthetic while the addition of Blackbutt in the ceiling and cabinets along with verdant vistas from the glazing add a warm sense of sanctuary to the monolithic living spaces.
